Dont normally do each way bets. But have been having a go with some handicap races of late and I thought ALL handicaps paid 1/4sp. I have noticed on a lot of handicap races the bookies only pay 1/5sp...............have things changed or has this always been way.

example
2.40 pont hand 9 runners 1/5 3 only pay out
3.00 bath hand 15 runners 1/4 4 only pay out
3.10 pont hand 18 runners 1/4 4 only pay out
4.10 pont hand 11 runners 1/5 3 only pay out WHY ONLY 1/5 of SP ::swear

Have we got to have 12 runners or more for the 1/4 pay out.

Paul

There is a table of e/w terms somewhere on this site, I'm sure. But I will repeat the info here anyway.

4 or less runners: no e-w; win only
5-7 runners: 2 places, 1/4 odds
8 or more: 3 places, 1/5 odds
12-15 runners (handicap): 3 places, 1/4 odds
16+ (handicap): 4 places, 1/4 odds

So yeah, you need 12 runners for the 1/4 odds in a handicap and 16 runners for the 4th place. Except on Betfair where their number of places remains the same even when non-runners are declared. So if the market opens with a field of 16 for a handicap there will be 4 places even if one or more horses pulls out.

From a bookies rules:

Each-Way :
This is a common bet which allows you to place a stake of equal amounts on a selection to either win an event or to be placed, usually in the top three or four depending on the size of the field. The price for the place part of the bet is usually a quarter or a fifth of the odds for an outright win.

For Horse and Greyhound Racing, the place part of Each-Way bets are usually settled at the following Place Terms :

NON HANDICAP RACES :

2-4 Runners Win Only

5-7 Runners ¼ the Odds 1, 2

8 or more Runners 1/5 the Odds 1, 2, 3

HANDICAP RACES :

2-4 Runners Win Only

5-7 Runners ¼ the Odds 1, 2

8-11 Runners 1/5 the Odds 1, 2, 3

12-15 Runners ¼ the Odds 1, 2, 3

16 or more Runners ¼ the Odds 1, 2, 3, 4

It's not worth backing anything EW unless it's 12/1+
