Trying to install a new HP printer...when I spoke to HP helpdesk seeking assistance , they pointed me in the direction of Microsoft..who are happy to help at the cost of a mim £50..... , as my pc isn't accessing .EXE ( whatever that means ) files.....p.c dummy here.

Get back on to HP and give them some grief! Internet explorer is an EXE file - it means executable and your PC cannot function (in any way) without them.

Ask the helpdesk to explain exactly WHY you need to contact MS and then pop back here and we'll try to help.

You could always try looking for the printer drivers on the web (go to google type the the printers name and the word drivers). Save the driver info to a known location. Then run/open/execute the setup or install program that should now reside in the location you saved the drivers to.
