152 Grand National entries. How do they get down to 40?

Only joking... I think it's the top 40 (pop-pickers) that get in.... early withdrawals would mean the next in line getting their chance.. but I could be wrong!

Isn't there a few stages to the entry?

Now there are 152 horses whose trainer thinks they may get a run. At the next entry stage some trainers may have changed their mind due to one thing or another and not pay the next installment of the entry fee. That will reduce the numbers. I think there are three or four such stages, then the top 40 get in with a few put in reserve. Remeber, if you don't enter your horse at the first stage it can't run so better to enter it when the entry fees are low and pull it out later than regret not entering it into the National.

Isn't it a bit like Wimbledon (who have seedings separate from the world rankings) in that the weights are set separately from the BHB ratings?
