What happens next if you take a bet after the event?

What happens next if you take a bet after the event?I thought it was void but I'd check Betfair rules (assuming it was on Betfair)

But unless the market is suspended I guess the bet must stand.

Well I guess I win - I laid it when I herd it had ran out but wondered why betting was continuing.
