Is a claiming hurdle regarded as handicap or non handicap

Never really thought about it before :doh

A non-handicap. The trainer sets the weight to be carried, not the BHB. This means that the runners are not always weighted to win. Ironic when you consider putting it out with the "wrong" tactics can constitute a rule breach but in a claimer you can saddle a donkey with top weight so it has no chance.

If you were of an overly pedantic frame of mind you could call it a handicap though!

Why don't they just all give their horse the lowest possible weight then?

How does it work?

Because the higher the weight the more it costs to claim the horse......

Weight is alloted by the trainer and the mor eweight they carry the higher the price one has to pay to claim the horse. So if you give it no weight, it might win easily, be mor elikely to be claimed and you'll lose it for little money.

So in a way they are handicapped by the trainer? So although it is regarded as a non-handicap it is really a handicap:fizz:

Yes Marcus......but they are prima facie more difficult to solve than regular handicaps......because of the inconsistent form lines.........besides, you have to try and ascertain if the trainer wants to win the bloody race.....:yikes:

Ah but the important thing here is that the RP classify it as Non Handicap.

Merlin

Whats so important about that.......it just means that they dont run according to BHB RATINGS.........you have already said its a kind of handicap.......weights alloted by trainers........:yikes:

If they really wanted the horse to win, they
would put the best jock they could get on it
wouldn't they... Totally Scottish didn't.

Don't I make this gambling lark sound easy! :laugh

Thats why many people , including me, will consider claiming races as handicap races.... before for instance considering non-handicap favs at a certain track.......

Is anything as it seems :laugh

If you're not sure, check the number of runners - if it's 15 and 1 has been withdrawn, it's probably a handicap!!!!! :laugh
