Morning all,

Does anyone know if there is any recommended cheap/free software out there that will convert a Windows Media File into an AVI/MPEG file? So that the movie is suitable to burn onto a DVD.

Cheers.
Mark.

Not sure if this is what you need but as it happens I got this from a friend the other day:

"I think I may have had some success in the avi/mpg - dvd conversions thingyum. I haven't fully tested it, so can't be sure yet -
but it seems the best solution is:

Use WinAVI
Use the batch conversion function to convert about 4-6 episodes at once at high quality (make sure you've got plenty of disk space
- about 1.6gig per 30 min episode)
This will take about 15-20 mins per 25-30 min episode - so leave it running over night (oh, and close down absolutely everything
else so that you're using as much memory as possible)

Download DVD Shrinker (it's freeware)
Point it to the files created by WinAVI
Set it running

DVD Shrinker will compress the files to 4.7GB so they fit on a single DVD. So you should be able to get 6 episodes on one disk in
reasonable quality I reckon."

I have no idea what the episodes were of and I didn't want to ask as I was just one of several recipients of that e-mail but maybe some of that will help.
