I am looking for a site which can help me find out how many bets are needed when selecting more than one selection per race. let's say I've picked 2 horses in 4 races this would work out as 32 Trebles 16 foursomes But need help or be given a formula as I may fancy doing perms in more than 4 races.

many thanks

The easiest formula to express the number of different ways (or permutations) that a given event can occur is factorials. This is a number multiplied by every whole number lower than itself and is usually expressed as x! For example 1! is 1, 2! is 2 (2 x 1), 3! is 6 (3 x 2 x 1), 4! is 24 (4 x 3 x 2 x 1) and so on.

To select a certain number of permutations from a total number of events you would use the formula x P y where x = number of events and y = number of factors. So in your example of pickng 2 horses from 4 events, the total number of ways they can be combined is 4! P 2! or 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 / 2 x 1 = 4 x 3 (the 2 x 1 is cancelled out on both sides of the equation) = 12 possible permuations.
