AN old colleaguee has asked me about this - he has a very old Dell Pentium 100 which he's replacing with a brand new shiny Dell. He wants to transfer his files and documents from the old one to the new one as simply as possible, but he doesn't have any sort of back up device - CD writer, Zip drive etc. What's his best option - could he use a null modem cable to connect them and transfer them that way?

Thanks,

Campbell

If he's on the WWW just get some free space, and dump them there.

That was an option but he's on dial up and has tons of stuff from his scientific friends, Word docs, and PDF's so I'd imagine that taking him days to sort out.

Thanks Tony, that would have been ideal but because his old PC is so old it's only running Win 95 - no USB support

Either buy an external HD (should be able to acquire a second-hand one relatively cheaply but about £70-£80 new) or else connect the old HD as an additional drive inside the new PC.

Just buy a cheap CD-Writer for £10, and use that, he can then install it in the new system

Have a read of this which might give you a few pointers

Don't forget that XP also comes with a free file transfer utility - all you need is a serial cable to connect them both up with (unless you want to use floppies)

Now that Must be a very Old friend :laugh

Surely the new machine will have a CD or more likely a DVD writer in it. Just take it out, shove it in the old clockwork machine and bung the old data on a CD or DVD, then put it back in the new machine......
