A quick search for the same film on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk will show that the Americans get on average 8 minutes extra for their money (just for the main feature that is).

eg.

The Shawshank Redemption
UK running time - 136 minutes
US running time - 142 minutes

Pulp Fiction (non-special edition)
UK running time - 148 minutes
US running time - 153 minutes

Seven Samurai
UK running time - 190 minutes
US running time - 208 minutes :yikes:

So the question is....why??? :doh

Because us Brits don't need to exaggerate about length :D

he he. The average was only 6 minutes, but I thought 8 sounded better. :D

Our Film Classification Board is also harsher with the scissors when it comes to removing things that might upset us or our kiddies.

There is actually a technical reason for this discrepancy - it's to do with frame rates - here it's 25 frames a second, in ths states it's 24fps, so a 100 minute movie in the States will last 96 minutes here.... :)

An excellent (and indeed the correct) answer Big C :D
