If you need a really really gripping read to take on hol.. MICHAEL CONNOLLY.. VOID MOON. I`m a great fan of his anyway .. The Poet and The Narrows being the best I`ve read to date but this is a great one about a Casino heist (sort-of )...woman thief, lots of lovely Las Vegas stuff... not great art but a great read..
also just read THE GAMBLERS about Jimmy Goldsmith/Aspinall/Lucan and the Clermont set of the 1960s... another good read though I wanted more insider stuff..good though.
Just thought I`d mention.. :I read so much, never really know what people might like so don`t recommend on here but thought with beaches in mind..will put up more if anyone`s interested, :hearty

Hi Susan,

Have you read 'Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow' by Peter Hoeg? T'is probably my favourite book. I haven't finished it yet though. :D

I also enjoyed "Void Moon" very much ...

Your mention above of the Clermont set reminded me of a book I read last year: "Dead Lucky - Lord Lucan: The Final Truth", by Duncan Maclaughlin. An interesting "account".

The War of Don Emanuels Nether Parts
Senor Vivo and the Coca Lord
The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman

A trilogy by Louis De Bernieres. The best books I have ever read, and I've read lots from the classics to trashy SAS novels. Make you want to cry in despair one chapter and cry for sheer joy the next. If you've read Captain Corelli don't be fooled. That was the bread and butter book to pay the bills, these are the real deal.

Alternatively, my favourite holday book ever was

Ivanhoe

Amazing story, and actually more enjoyable the second time round (I started it again as soon as I 'd finished it it was so good!)

DON'T read the Da Vinci Code. What a load of old twaddle. Uninspired, formulaic, over complicated, corny and a crappy ending are only some of the things I have to say about it!

"The Tweenies Try Dogging" :D

They are excellent books keith and all totally different ( apart from the last two for obvious reasons )

For those who like blood and gore - anything by Shaun Hutson - he is an amazing author.

I read 'The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail', about 20 years ago, no-one could understand why I was bored out of my unit by the above book. :anger

I loved them all Susan, as I told you before I couldn't get into the earlier works such as Ladies and Gentlemen, so if anyone is wondering I am not working on commission :laugh
These are books that once I started I couldn't put down.

:yikes: doh! OFF, is it really that bad? I have heard so many good reports about this book and i am very tempted to buy it. Does anybody else have an opinion on this book?

I have not read a book in ages and actually i quite miss it. I am going to start reading again because i do enjoy it. Anybody got anymore recommendations?

Susan, what genre of books do you write?

I read that too, and the follow up. There's a new updated version of the HB&HG out now, might give that a go. If you want a good read about the Knights Templar and the Crusades, this is a brilliant book - written like an adventure story, pretty much unputdownable.... now Susan will tell me off for using such a 'non-word' :)

Does anybody else have an opinion on this book?Yeah, it's trashy fiction that will convert perfectly to a Hollywood blockbuster. It's worth reading in my opinion. Not the best by Dan Brown but by no means the worst (Deception Point is worst).

I read Da Vince Code and the other Dan Brown books over a few weeks of commuting and they helped the journey go by.

I'd offer more book recommendations but I only really read books about gambling at the minute

Ignore Big C.. I am allowed to give you the title of my website (not about racing and if anyone puts SPAM here they`re just doing the usual wind-up..)which will tell you all you need to know.. www.susan-hill.com... 37 books, mainly novels, from serious literary fiction to ghost novel (The Woman in Black) to a new series of crime novels.. few children`s books thrown in when the girls were small...
DA VINCI CODE.. it isn`t as bad as all that.. it`s page turning, as they say.. I don`t know a lot about the background but if you just want to enjoy it and after all millions have, then buy it.
I`m having a summer of reading light-ish stuff... apart from my usual Dickens-per-summer... just finished AT RISK, the thriller by the former head of M15 Stella Rinmington.. great stuff, with a briliant twist a the end. Not Dickens but terrific for a long journey etc. :hearty
also just re-read THE BIG SLEEP by Raymnd Chandler..fantastic .. and boy, could be write.. wonderful Humphrey Bogart-type evocation of 1930s america.. :hearty

Ivanhoe has the Knights Templar in it, he kicks their Champions :butthead: . Also has Robin Hood and a swine-herd called Gurth!

David Copperfield is my favourite Dickens, laughed out loud many times, along with tears of sorrow and happiness. Stunning.

I've always enjoyed Greg Bear as a SF writer, but you do need a reasonable understanding of physics to get through his books. Very realistic stories though, based real physical rules.
