Tote betting

Can someone explain in simple terms how tote betting works. a mate of mine tried to explain it to me, but i dont think he knew what he was talking about. I always ignore it completely. is it worth looking into?

In simple terms, the Tote is like the football pools - all the money bet on each race goes into a pool, and after the Tote take their cut the rest is divided up among those who backed the winner. There are separate pools for different bets, such as win, place, exacta (same as forecast), placepot etc etc. Big priced winners tend to pay more on the Tote than SP, exactas tend to pay more than the bookies forecasts, especially on bigger wins. Worth having an account for the placepots if you do them

....and the Tote take about 20%-30% out for themselves before sharing it out to the winners :yikes:
