is there any general rule about when to put the bets on? I never get it right!

What I do is check Betfair and see if there is a 'trend' on the horse - click on the horses name and see if the graph has a gradual upwards or downwards pattern. If the general trend is downwards, it is being backed and probably wise to take what is on offer. If it is drifting, leave an order for half your intended stake just above what is on offer and the other half of the stake a bit higher. REMEMBER to check back before the race to make sure your bets have been matched!
