Hi everyone. :Helooo

I have just discovered this site and i must say it looks brilliant. A bit awkward to navigate round but im just here and im sure ill get used to the layout and terminology
I enjoy the occasional bet on a horse but as you probably already know the bookie always wins. ;fire However from this site i realise theres the possibility of winning over the long term with lay bets and also some very good advice at hand.
Going to try some paper betting first and start with a bank.
I will join the members area for a day next week at some point to see the beginners advice etc. (Not just now as im going to bed shortly and will be working tomorrow)
Just wondering though, Whats the best way to record what i bet on and the results?

Hi Aaron, and welcome to the forum. You'll get used to navigating your way around here - it's simple enough when you get to grips with the menus on the blue bar near the top of each page.

Your question about recording bets - best is to use a spreadsheet, if you're not able to use one, then plain old pen and paper will suffice, but a spreadsheet can allow you to try out different staking plans to see what works best for you. Good luck!

Date, time, course, horse Stake result and reason for betting on it.

You should be able to fill in any other blanks like race type, Class of race, Prize Money Ground Conditions Weight and anything that you feel might help when you do a post mortum on the races you bet in.

Us mods have access to all the user details, so we can change anything untoward in signatures such as spammers websites etc. We also know your bank account details, your porn site passwords, and especially for Vegy, your inside leg measurement ... one or more of those statements may not be strictly speaking true :D

Hi Aaron, glad to see you came back :yikes:

Regarding you bookies comment: (bookie always wins)

Im not sure if you still use bookies accounts or use the exchanges, but if you dont use the exchanges, you should. I have about 5 small bookie banks, just in case the prices are better, but I seldom use them anymore as betfair almost always have a better price.

the prices are much better (about 10-20% in the difference, and much higher for long shots) about 90% of the time

Welcome Back

Wayne

Thanks

Im thinking about using a laying system. Giving the fact i dont know the first thing about horses it will probably be based on odds. Dont know if thats good or not. I have no idea what my SR will be as im yet to find out. I will be using Betfair. (theoreticly as its only paper money just now.)
I will obviously not be laying the favourite. Probably the 3rd or 4th fav. I will not lay on horses over 10. I will not be laying on handicap races. I will raise and lower the stakes depending on the odds to avoid paying out too much when a horse wins.
Whens the best time to pick the horse. Does it have to be the day of the race or can it be the night before as i make sweaters during the day. (Im making a lovely red one now :) ) And wheres the best site to get the results.

Cheers for any further words of wisdom
Aaron.

racingpost.co.uk put up the cards at about 8 o clock, the evening before the race, around the same time as betfair - so it is ok to do the research the night before.

The problem with betfair is that it takes a while for people to stick offers up and therefore the market can take a while to even out.

So when it comes to laying, betfair prices are not usually great the night before, therefore the next day is best. But if you are only papertrading, you could use the Starting Price.

Why do you not want to lay on hanidicap races?

I might join next pay cheque. but its nearing christmas and i need to buy prezzies and stuff. But i probably will in the near future.

The impression i got off handicap races are that the horses are handicapped therefore its harder to judge who is mostly likely to win. In fact i dont know what im talking about, i just got the impression it wasnt a good idea to start off with. Maybe i should bet on them then.

For WIN bets start with non-handicaps
For LAY bets start with handicaps
If your name is VEGY your handicapped anyway whatever you do :D

Hello again.

After reading more posts again about pro-losers and lays i can clearly see you have a system that works. Well ive decided i want in but just a couple of questions.
From what i gather £200 is a reasonable bank to start with. However i have to wait until i can afford to lose this amount. (As your advice says) Is it possible to go any lower than this given that the minimum stake in betfair is £2. If i can i might join next pay cheque or should i wait until i can afford to lose the £200. (Cant go the £200 this month or else the nephews and neice wont get good xmas prezzies)

Thanks again
Aaron

If you join in a very good run, we'll all have pressies :D

£100 @ £2 is pushing it, but possible. You can always add to the bank later.

there is a way around the £2 minimum.

not sure if it is ok to say how to do it here (mods??)

you could always get the 48 hour access at weekends or something, for the backing bets, just to try it out.

there is also more much more advice about staking/backing/laying in the members area. the lays are more of a long term thing, so I dont reckon the 48 hour access is really suitable for these, although im not sure if they would work if you did them weekends only

I haven't read the whole thread but I presume you are talking about Betfair?

They clamped down on people using the "<£2 method" and issued them with a warning - "stop else we'll ban you" type thing. It's still do-able, but I wouldn't take the risk if I were you. :)

Thanks for the info.

I will see how my next pay cheque looks then.
Meanwhile im still going to do the paper races for fun. If i win it will probably be pure luck.

Aaron.

dont forget to check the free site every day. the A+ and A bets etc.have the same strike rate as the members A+ and A bets. I made a nice little profit following them for about a year before signing up

I might just do that. Going to look at the advice given for what to stake and bank etc now.
