Can anyone reccommend a free downloadable AV?. My old one is about to run out and they want me to pay to renew it. I read the stickys and installed ad-aware and spybot search & destroy some time back, but I just want a good AV also.

Thanks.

Im at college, so I will try it later when I get home.

Do I need to un-install the old one first, or does it make any difference?

And Matt downloads a serious amount of midget porn so, you know...really...that's a quality anti-virus there maaaaan.

I used to have AVG - It always worked for me until I installed zone alarm then I had loads of problems so I sacked it.

Do I need to un-install the old one first,

Yes, definitely as they can cause all sorts of problems otherwise.

I had ZA pro for a while and it did it's job well till an update caused huge problems... it stopped working, I couldn't reset back to an earlier version, I couldn't uninstall it properly, and I ended up having to edit the registry and all sorts of crap to get rid of it. That was the second update that had caused me hassle.... needless to say I use a totally different firewall now - Agnitum Outpost Pro... absolutley no problems with this one at all.

I second that..... I install the anti-virus on all the new laptops at work and the one time I forgot to remove the free one first I ended up having to reformat the entire hard-disk..... I wont be making that mistake again

Would it be ok to leave ad-aware and search&destroy on?

Would it be ok to work on spreadsheets while a virus scan is going on?

Yep, ctrl+alt+del and go into processes....try not to run anything that's using over 80,000k in memory usage
