I have 2 computers both with windows 2000 on, my son has given me a copy of windows xp pro that he installed on his computer to install on mine. I installed it on 1 machine yesterday and it ran fine then when I turned it off it down loaded 40 windows updates last night. When I try to start it up this morning it comes up with the windows xp logo then restarts again & again & again & again & again.::swear

Did you reformat before installing XP?

It sometimes doesnt matter but I've upgraded a few machines for friends / family in the past and sometimes XP just doesnt like being installed over the top of another OS

If the XP disk is bootable, boot from CD & run the FIX.

Booted from CD and ran fix now the logo comes on screen and it says
"Please Wait".

I've been waiting now for 3 hours for it to do something else but no luck as yet! ::swear

Try running the Fix again, if that fails, just reformat and start again....this time do not install all the updates at once.

Mark,

When you've installed XP but BEFORE you load Windows Updates, right-click on My Computer, select Properties, Advanced. Under Startup and Recovery select Settings then disable Automatic Restart. Then when an update encounters a problem, you'll get the blue screen with an error message that will help identify the problem. Once your OS is stable, you can re-enable Automatic Restart.

It's important that all updates are performed in the right order too - I suspect that might've been the problem. For example, if you try to install an update to SP2 but haven't yet installed SP2, then that can lead to the type of problem you're experiencing.

You can find an excellent guide to installing XP here

YESSSSSSSSSS! :spinning :spinning :spinning :spinning :spinning

Thanks for all the help, now got it going. :D :D :D :D

Strange but I found out that I do not like people looking over my shoulder when I am putting on my bets (my wife & kids kept on at me to use my one in my study). :wiggle:
