What is the Rowley Mile, and how does it differ to any other mile?

It's straight, but bumpy......but not as bumpy as the Irish tracks, which are like trial bike circuits :)

The Rowley Mile is the part of Newmarket that is in Suffolk (about 10f long). The first mile and a half or so is in Cambridgeshire then at the bend it becomes the July Course (much nicer) which runs along the county border for a mile and the Rowley Mile (which has the stupidest stand in racing history).

The "Rowley Mile" is named after King Charles II who, in turn, was called "Old Rowley" after his favourite horse. I believe Charles II even rode him at Newmarket in a race and won although, as he wasn't one of the A+ bets, I didn't risk a wager at the time :D

The phrase "I'll eat my hat" was also originally "I'll eat Old Rowley's hat" after the rather extravagant headgear that was all the fashion in those days.
