I'm trying to play a dsl stream, but every time I click the link, I get a black box, which simply says 'ready'. There are no controls, and I cant seem to get it to work. I have tried changing the default players from media to realplayer etc. but no joy. I know the website is working, because FTB and others have confirmed that they can watch.

Is there anything I can check?

It could be a number of reasons:

1. Your firewall/your ISPs firewall might be blocking the communication protocol or data type.

2. Your ISP is probably using a cache, or the cache might be ignoring headers to allow dynamic data streaming.

3. By default, Windows Media Player uses Internet Explorer Local Area Network and Proxy Server settings to access live stream data packets. You might have changed these settings. In Media Player, select Tools, Options, Network and make sure you've enabled Multicast, UDP, TCP, and HTTP. Click the Configure button and select the option to "Use proxy settings of the Web browsers." Click OK, close Media Player, and retry.

4. There might simply be not enough sockets available for you to connect to on the remote server.

5. Some connections are also to slow to handle faster streaming speeds.

6. Try clicking Start then Set Program Access and Defaults. Check the Microsoft option so that your PC defaults to using the most compatible settings. Note that if you're using different browsers/email clients etc., you'll need to switch back to Custom mode afterwards.

This problem has got worse, and it will play very few videos now. For example, the ATR archive.... It just pops up a blank screen, and says 'ready' but it won't play. I installed windows media 11 but no joy. I also tried changing my defaults to other players etc. but noting works.... Is there anything else I can do? I want to watch the King George as I missed it because of work :(

Ok this is a ridicously long time later, but videos are still not working...

I've checked everything, except for this:

Your ISP is probably using a cache, or the cache might be ignoring headers to allow dynamic data streaming.

How do I check if this is the case?

Have you tried it through Opera/Firefox? Maybe an IE issue.

Yeah, Tried a few different Browsers. Videos such as youtube work, yet the likes of atr wont. When I try to play an atr video, I click on play and it says 'Playlist Open - No Media' When I look up the error deatails, it says 'Windows Media Player cannot play the file. If the file is located on the Internet, connect to the Internet. If the file is located on a removable storage card, insert the storage card.'

What version of Media Player and what OS?

If it's Media Player 9 go to Tools, Options, Player and make sure that "connect to internet" is checked.

If it's a newer version, the check out the C00D10B3 link on this Microsoft page http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/mediaadvice/0106.mspx for Media Player 10 and that you're not trying to view content in an "offline" state. Also check if it's an issue with your firewall.

For earlier versions there's a registry fix available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317101 Usual caveats about backing up your registry apply.

If none of those solutions work, try reinstalling Media Player.

What format is the stream? I just had to install the Divx CODECs on my mates yesterday to get it to play a stream on Media 10. Although maybe you're not trying to watch porn :icon_tong

Thanks lads. I went through everthing you advised and figured it out..

In case anyone else has this problem with the latest version of media player,
Open media player,
Click Tools
Click Options
Make sure the box which says 'connect to the internet(overrides other commands)' is clicked

I dont know how this was not clicked, as I certainly did not change it.

Thanks again!

That's why I put that tip first...I figured it would be the one that sorted it out for you.
