Three of us live here, and we're on an unlimited 8mb line for - I think - £17.99 (blimey, I remember when you could pay that much and only get 1mb). Anyway, we got issued with what was apparently our THIRD warning last week :doh strangely enough it's the FIRST warning we have received! :laugh

Apparently we've been downloading too much, thus slowing down other users on our shared line. So between 5-11pm they've put a maximum bandwidth transfer allowance on our line.

Question is, can they do this? The contract states it is an unlimited line surely meaning that there should be no cap on the quantity of bandwidth we use. Think I'll have a read of their T&C before giving them a call.

Read the T&C, it is the same for all ISP's as they have to pay BT for the bandwidth through there system. You need to pay attention to the ISP's FAIR USAGE POLICY you agreed to when joining.

The only true unlimited you get is if you have AOL, a 1:1 line, or a business line :D :D

Keith is right, I'm on Tiscali (moved from AOL) and it does say in the contract that you can use the service as much as you want, but only under the fair usage scheme. If you download alot and it is during the day your service will have a limit on it, but after 11pm its considered no problem and you can download as much as you want.

So on a night perform as many downloads then :wiggle:

Aye, cheers Racer, I tend do most of my downloading at night, when there are less people around as it is. Usually get much faster download speeds well after midnight too, and not just because the cap is released.

recently NTL went unlimited across all speeds, though they might still have a fair usage policy as well... I've yet to be hassled by them and I probably average 100Gb a month, if not more.
