View Full Version : Saturday's ordeal

Went to a "house party" on Saturday night that turned out to be rubbish. A group of us (6 including myself) decided to have a game. Wish I'd never bothered!

1) One player went all-in pre-flop on pocket 8's and won that round. :ermmm

2) Another player called the flop (9/J/Q), turn (4) and river (Q) holding 8/3... :ermmm

3) After 4 people folded I was 1 on 1 with Dave, I'm holding A/Q. Anyway we get to the river and call the shots... both of us have Aces but he's got a King kicker. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the pot is supposed to be split equally if you draw, regardless of the kicker? :ermmm

Anyway, after much debate, 2 of us are left, we'd been playing for an hour and a half and I'd had enough by this point... I know it sounds harsh but there's nothing worse than playing poker with people who just chuck money at anything. I folded J/Q pre-flop because someone raised something like triple the big blind and had nothing... On another round we both had open-ended straights but his was the higher one, so he won on that... rubbish but what can you do!

if he has a better kicker then it isn't a draw, and he should take the pot.
hold-em is always a 5 card game and if he had A-K-x-x-x vs A-Q-x-x-x then his hand is better.

as for chucking money at everything, you will find it very profitable playing against thoes sorts (long term), - try being a bit tighter when playing against them.

All in with 88...well he was strictly speaking ahead pre flop and I'd be more interested in what the callers had.

8-3....well you should be delighted to have this guy playing.

You should know the guy with the better kicker would win John!!

Poker is going to be a central part of my birthday celebrations in a couple of weeks. I am organising a tourney (similar structure to an online STT to get it moving) and then there will be cash games till the early hours.

Granted, I enjoyed playing and took a few hands off them, sometimes quite easily that I wouldn't have won if I'd be playing you lot. In future I'll make it clear before the game starts that the person with the higher kickers win... unless that's a fundamental rule already and everyone but me knew. :doh

All poker hands are 5 cards so pots are only split if two or more players have equally ranked 5 cards hands (suits play no part in the ranking).
