I won't be buying it - not able to run it on my poor old laptop. Plus I don't really need it yet, haven't seen any real advantages for me.

You mean you loaded the demo?
It was slower than XP when I tested it a few months back, but they are supposed to have fixed that. It's more a question of I need it, as XP is a pain in the ass with the amount of software it has to handle on my system. Maybe Vista will be just as bad, but I don't think so.
It's also 64-bit, which is a bonus once code writings get around to using it.
I'll be doing it from a clean install though, not an upgrade, and I'll get my copies in the US.

It is out for commercial/professional/businesses since 30-11 and will be released for consumers on 31-1. Although released on 30-11 the final version (build 6000) was available on the internet on 11-11...
I will not install it before they close security holes which I presume there will be many...

So you'll never install it then? :doh Every OS has security issues throughout its life.
Unlike XP, Vista has a big black hole between OS & Internet.

Oops made a typo. I meant close some security holes. It is also not the main reason. Just am a little conservative on installing new OS. In the past had a problems with correct drivers etc. Also waiting till more programs are more compatible with Vista.
Moreover I'll try it when it is available in my native language (Dutch) so I can understand what Vista is saying when I'm screwing up :).

The Dutch version is easy to get.....the English is harder.
You can always install it clean, and slowly move over. That's the way I do it.

I will give it a try on a second partition. If no posts of me will appear anymore something went wrong... :)

It does change the boot up menu when you power up. Defaults to Vista, and you have to change it in Vista if you want XP as default, you can't do it from XP.

Vista code is completely rewritten, and needs a different type of AV. It also has its own better firewall as part of the OS, although Zonealarm should have one out around March (it will not behave like the XP version though).
In the security center in Vista, there should be options to install MS's own AV, AVG, Avast, etc
