View Full Version : Ie7

IE7 hasn't worked since I installed it a few weeks ago. Clicking the icon brings up the IE screen with "connecting" in the toolbar, but there it stays - never does connect.
Default browser is AOL. Any ideas?
Possibly related (then again, possibly not) is the fact that I'm unable to download certain things, an example being Adobe Acrobat 8 which I've attempted this morning. I get as far as the Adobe Download Manager screen which hangs permanently with the narrative "waiting for a connection". Do some downloads require IE to be open?

I can not download i.e 7 at all, and that is on my new pc.
It starts then comes up with a message saying unable to install.
Perhaps there is a fault with i.e 7 itself??

I'm assuming that you can connect properly with other browsers so first off try the following:
Click Tools, Internet Options.
Click Connections.
Select your default connection in the list (presumably AOL)
Click on Settings.
Check the box that says Automatically Detect Settings.
Repeat this for all of the Settings in the list. Also select the same option if you're on a LAN by clicking on the LAN Settings button.
OK back out then close IE7 and restart it.
Another thing you can try is to alter the proxy settings but you'll need to know the address and port number for your AOL proxy. You should be able to find that on their site somewhere. Here's how to go about changing it:
Click Tools, Internet Options.
Click Connections.
Click on your default connection then on Settings.
Click the box that says Use A Proxy Server.
Enter the address and port number.
OK back out then close IE and restart.
One other thing to bear in mind is that AOL use their own bespoke version of Internet Explorer. They actually make changes to the browser which might (actually probably does) conflict with the security changes made in IE7. AOL's version of IE is also notorious for loading up Browser Help Objects in registry. So it might be a case of waiting until they issue an update - the alternative would be to remove all traces of AOL (and their connections) from your PC but that isn't always an easy task.
It's also worthwhile making sure that you uninstall any BHO's that AOL might've added (or any other BHO's come to that) by clicking on Tools, Manage Add-ons. It should default to showing all Add-ons that are currently loaded but, if not, select that from the drop-down list. Then select each BHO in turn and choose the Disable option from the Settings. When you're done, select OK, then close and restart IE7. If it works now, you can then selectively enable your BHO's until you identify the one that's causing the problem.

If you get an error message saying that IE7 can't install, it's important that you restart your PC so that any setup changes are undone. When you've done that, you'll need to check the log files to see what the specific error was. You can find these logs in your Windows folder called:
ie7_main.log
ie7.log
ie7Uninst.log
Open these files in Notepad and see what they say. My guess is that you don't have administrator priviliges on your current PC.

Thanks Glos I will try it again and let you know what it says.

Glos - thanks. Yes, connection through AOL is fine. The first suggestion, unfortunately, doesn't do it but I'll work through the others :)

Yes mate, but only the XP one, which really shouldn't conflict with IE. I did install Zonealarm but don't use it since it slowed things down enormously.

Update - it's AOL's fault. Here's the reply from their Live Help rep:
"16:09:42
Subhash
I would like to inform you that AOL is in process to make it compatible with IE 7 which may take 1 month time"
:splapme Surprised that I'm the first to raise the query - are there other AOL users on here? And does it explain why I can't download Adobe Acrobat 8 (or, for that matter, use Auto Betfair despite having downloaded it apparently successfully?)

AOL isn't as popular here as it is in the US...hence the name! It still might be worth checking out the Browser Help Objects anyway - there are quite a few non-AOL ones that also conflict with IE7.

They've only bought the rights to access the database of AOL users in the UK. Carphone Warehouse will "manage" the database while AOL will still be responsible for providing the IE-look-alike portal, the usual AOL content and services, and all the advertising.
