Hi guys,

I'm trying to set my parent's new laptop up using a wireless internet connection. From work, dad has brought home a wireless router and a USB network adapter. Now, I've followed what it asks me to do (sort of) and it doesn't work... I'll explain.

I've connected the existing NTL modem, and the router, using an Ethernet cable, like it told me to do. (Connect one end into the Ethernet port on your modem and one end into the Internet port on the router). It then told me to connect the router to the laptop, using another Ethernet cable, which surely defeats the point of it being wireless? I don't have another Ethernet cable anyway. So what I did was use the USB network adapter "in place of" the second Ethernet cable (I think this overwrites the cable, hence it being wireless) so that they can talk to each other... and they do... the signal strength was 97% when I hooked everything up... but as soon as I tried to connect from the setup wizard running on the laptop, it got bewildered and came up with:

"Cannot find an access point"

What does this mean? And how can I fix it? Do I need another Ethernet cable to establish the connection so that it knows it's there, before connecting the network adapter?

It's a Linksys router and adapter, by the way. 2.4GHz and 802.11g (laptop supports this).

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

The software assumes that the WALL connection point to the modem is an Ethernet one, and it isn't, it uses a coaxial cable.

I've spoken to Darren (FTB) and he has said that I should be able to generate a key from the CD supplied with the router. I presume this stage exists within the installation but I can't reach it... it just gets to a point where a connection is needed and it says "Cannot connect to router".....

All I know is on my one you goto set up access list, the router seeks out the mac address of your pc/laptop with the adapter plugged in, add this to your trusted wireless stations and just make sure the WEP keys all match up. And I can only access the settings menu by going to IE and going to address 192.168.0.1

John this may sound stupid but i know from experiance that belkin do two sorts of routers one for ntl cable and one for broadband via the phone connection make sure you ahve the correct router first..Not sure about linksy but check that first..

Thanks David, I'm not sure how I find out which version I have though? It's called a Broadband router, but the clue might not all be in the name.

The router can't seek the mac address PS because it can't find the Internet connection. I have managed to successfully get into the settings though, and I've also managed to connect to the access point (although this is somewhat temperamental) but no joy between the router and the modem I'm afraid.

I downloaded a program from the Linksys website but I need 2 Ethernet cables to connect the router to the modem and I only have 1. Besides I shouldn't have to do that.

I'm tempted to try it out on my iMac (in Windows) so I can be sure there is no problem with the laptop. If it doesn't work on either, I know the router/adapter has a fault of some sort.

I was hoping you could help me out Dave but having re-read your post it seems like we're both stuck!

I'm going to test the wireless setup on a different machine before I do anything else, to make sure it isn't the laptop that's causing the problem.

Miraculously, this now works, according to my mother.

"Johnny Boy, you'll never guess what, I'm sat in the living room on the Internet!"

"Wirelessly?"

"Yes!"

"Wow! How did you get it working?"

"Dad took the power cable out the back of the modem and plugged it back in."

:splapme

After EVERYTHING I tried, why didn't I think of that? :doh :ermmm
