Out of interest, who creates them and why?
You know the type...... 'Send this to 20 people and your wish will come true':mover
or the other ones, pretending to alert you to things like a virus doing the rounds, and that it's urgent that you warn all your mates.
Is anyone gaining anything from clogging up inboxes, and if so, how?

I don't think anyone gains anything really from that sort of email, other than the satisfaction of being a total dickweed and making paranoid folk even more paranoid! I get the odd one from a couple of friends... I'm forever telling them that all they are doing is perpetuating a stupid myth and helping clog up other folks' inboxes... but every so often another will arrive.

Sometimes it's a great form of advertising!
You might get a joke say, with a website address underneath.
Of course, you add that you must send this to 20 people or have bad luck, and that's free advertising to thousands of people!
People at my office have deliberately designated e-mail lists specifically for this type of chain mail, and I'm on them. ;fire

I remember seeing one once that was of a similar vein, do this, wish that, send to so many people and then you'd scroll down it said now smack yourself on the head for being such a ::swear::swear::swear::swear and believing this :D

Idiots.
Although I think the people who forward them on are more idiotic.
