There is much debate among historians regarding the first official race held and most who have trawled the newspaper libraries of the United Kingdom now prefer the idea that the first running was in 1836 and was won by The Duke. This same horse triumphed again in 1837, while Sir William was the winner in 1838. These races have long been disregarded because of the belief that the 1837 & 1838 runnings took place at Maghull and not Aintree. In the last twenty years, several race historians have unearthed indisputable evidence that these three races were all run over the same course at Aintree and were regarded as having been Grand Nationals up until the mid 1860s. To date though, their calls for the Nationals of 1836-38 to be restored to the record books have been ignored

Sorry, but I don't see the dispute, the answer is in the question, Aintree 1939, won by Lottery. The races at Maghull were pretty much experimental affairs. What I am going to call into dispute though:

The race was entitled the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase until 1843 when it was entitled The Liverpool & National Handicap Steeplechase which was won by Vanguard. Then it was called The Liverpool & National Steeplechase for a few years. It wasn't until Matthew @ 10/1, trained by Mr Courtenay & ridden by D Wynne in 1947, won a race called The Grand National Handicap Steeplechase @ Aintree. I would argue that as the most complete answer to the actual question.

Like i said earlier, the last ?? No.9 would be the hardest, though I have just read that Mill House was a hot favourite to beat Arkle in the 1964 Gold Cup. I also remember Carvill's Hill being a beaten hotpot in Garrison Savannah's year 1991 but I don't know the prices. There are so many other races which I haven't got info on - hold on, I'll just give Big Mac a ring:D

OK, the shortest priced winner was Arkle at 1/10 but generally prices tend to be higher because of the very nature of the competition. I'll stick my neck out and have a wild guess that around 4/7 would be the shortest losing price at a festival.

i actually find the price of the loser pretty hard to beleive to be honnest, and only have the comment made by an ATR present er to back it up (which could be wrong) - will have a bit of a google for a bit of proof later.

It is wrong...Pendil was 4/6 fav when narrowly beaten by The Dikler in 1973

Mill House was also 8/13 when losing to Arkle in 1964

My guess would be something in the Champion Bumper.

the shortest losing SP was 1/25 :yikes:
when commenting about the chances of juvegeyr 1/20 - the comment was made that stranger things have happened and a 1/25 shot was beaten at the cheltnham festivel.

i didn't beleive it either glos, perhaps i misheard and it was just the shortest SP that has lost, but i was sure he said at the cheltnam festival. - that was why it struck me as odd.

Yes,the shortest price winner over the years was Victory Spin running in May 1999 at odds of 1-66. The shortest price losers were Jizyah (1-10) who came 2nd in a 2 horse race in April 1993, and Luca Cumani's Ood Dancer (1-10) beaten 3.5l by Claire's Dancer in a 4 runner race in May 1996.Both were owned by the Al Maktoums.
