Anyone know what the error shown in the attached picture means?

I get it every time I start my PC now. I don't recall installing any software recently or changing anything. My virus and spyware scans come up clean

Eek - now I'm spookified - in the last 5 minutes, I have posted the above link; suffered from a short power outage that restarted my machine; discovered that my machine had the same fault (I haven't restarted it for about 6 weeks!); downloaded and applied the patch and I am now in the position to tell you that it works! :D

Not a bad 5 mins work :laugh

No - but I bet your Automatic Updates remembers installing something on, or around, April 3rd! Specifically a fix to solve a security problem in Windows GDI. Unfortunately the fix causes a conflict with other software, most noticeably the Realtek sound control panel.

Go here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935448/ to install the recommended download, reboot, and it should go away.

Nothing unusual for MS, although in their defense it does depend what Realtek version you have.

Just a quick update - and probably no need to fix it yourself now - on this DLL error. Microsoft originally issued an emergency patch at the beginning of April, primarily to counter possible threats to people playing World of Warcraft online. Unfortunately this patch also affected anyone running ElsterFormular, TUGZip, CD-Tag, and Realtek HD Audio Control Panel.

Microsoft have now issued a replacement patch as part of their normal Security Updates. Most of you with automatic updates will probably have downloaded and installed the newer patch today so you shouldn't now get the DLL error.

No problem on Vista :)

The patch applied to Vista as well - you either don't have any of the affected software, didn't install the original update, or else installed the replacement update before you noticed any visible effect.

That makes perfect sense to Vegy :D
