This place is a massive crater, miles wide, 7000ft up. Filled with water 2.5X more salty than the sea, you still get some life in it though. The cones are volcanic minerals, same as those you see on the ocean floor.
In the background are the 'live' cones of the volcano, although not active for 100 years, the whole are suffers from almost daily earthquakes.
