View Full Version : Going to a Spurs game....

In January.

I'm not big into soccer at all, but a mate of mine is a huge Spurs fan, and I said I'd go along with him to a game as he's never been to one. I'm looking for any advice/tips that may help out two lost Irish guys in north London. He has no internet access, so I'll be booking everything.

I need to know some basics, such as the best airport to fly to, any cheap (but clean!) hotels, any good pubs, or general advice.

I've been to London heaps of times, but it's usually to visit my uncle in Peckham, or another time I went to Kempton (where I enjoyed some pints with OFF, who subsequently sent me on the wrong train home!)

Thanks :)

YOu could fly to luton and get on the capital connect train at luton parkway. You could buy a one day ticket for about £15.00 and that would get you all the trains and tubes you need. I reckon you would fly ryanair? Train trip to london is about 45 mins and then you would need to go on the underground to get to spurs. Probably looking at about 1.5 hours from airport to ground.

As for hotels I would just say stay somewhere outside london unlesss you want a night out in london in which case, get a mortgage. You could get a hotel near the airport and get the last train back to there.

Well, as it stands, right now, to fly to Luton with ryanair would be 1 cent each way (twenty euro each including taxes), so that would be ideal.

There is a hotel at the airport which is functional.

You could get a train back from Central London in less than an hour. Last train is usually gone 1.00am (certainly at the weekend) so you could have a night out in london and get back to your hotel and be at the airport for the morning.

Cheers TH. I stayed in an Ibis hotel in London, and it was fine.

Looking on Google Map it is about 4.5 miles from stadium Wayne. Not sure if there are any tube stations round there though?

If you take a lookie here -
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/modalpages/2625.aspx

scroll down and you will see a journey planner, if you put the postcode of the hotel in and the postcode of the stadium it will show you how to get there.

Thanks again everyone. As far as I know, White Hart Lane train station connects to the tube at a station called sisters something or other, so it should'nt be too hard to get to.

Cheers guys. I think I'm going to stay in the hotel beside luton airport. Its pretty cheap and it may mean I won't be late for my return flight trying to get the last pint in. This has happened to me so many times in Glasgow!

Well, I've everything sorted and I'm going to the match on the 19th. Never realised premier league tickets are so expensive! Ended up costing around sixty euro each, but I don't care as I'm looking forward to a good weekend. Booked the Ibis near the airport, which turned out to be a great deal so thanks for that TH.

Not sure which team is worse at the moment though :)

I know nothing about English football, but if anyone can recommend a bet, it will give me an added interest.

Whatever you do dont let them think you support Sunderland Wayne. I nearly got lynched in the Tottenham end once, the stewards had to 'rescue' me :yikes: :laugh

Best not speak at all what with the Irish connection at Sunderleand :yikes:

I try to avoid White Hart Lane (I mean, I'm a Gooner - one must have certain standards, mustn't one).

But joking aside, I've been a few times in recent years and I do rate the stadium, if not the team. The fact that it's relatively small by Premiership standards, and usually full to capacity, means that the atmosphere takes some beating (contrast with, say, the silent prawn sandwich brigade at Old Trafford), the view is good from wherever you're sitting and you're nice and close to the pitch. I'm sure you'll enjoy it Wayne.

I went several times a few seasons ago,
but walking out into the ground from the gangway's
is a sight to behold... especially when you're more used to walking
into an empty cow shed at Brisbane Road :laugh

And round the back is a convoy of about 9 or 10 burger vans in a row.

I would recommend that you use these rather than the burger bar in the ground which are more expensive and only 1/4 the size!

(And if you used the bar inside you'd get some premenstrual teen instead of some bearded homeless looing fat fella serving you with a fag end hanging out his outh which is as it should be :laugh )
