So Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the The Republic of Ireland are going to start their own competition in 2011. Not that it'll help any of them win the World Cup (something England did in 1966), but it will allow their players to get used to playing competitive matches together as a team (something the England team don't need to do). It'll allow them to give new younger players the opportunity to play in the team albeit against opposition that they may have experienced in their league games (England prefer to take youngsters like Theo Walcott to experience real action in a real World Cup from the subs bench). They may even be able to sell the tv pictures of the games to expats around the World (England don't need the money). They may suffer the ignomy of defeat sometimes but at least Jock, Taff or Paddy know that if England had been in their Mickey Mouse tournament they wouldn't have a prayer against such top class opposition. They also know that England won the World Cup in 1966.

When their national anthems are playing, when the supporters in the stands and in the pubs are cheering, money changing hands in the bookies. Experiencing the orgasmic spirit of football, us English will know that it is far, far beneath us. Let the minions have their fun, after all England play as a team and we won the World Cup in 1966.
