I can't get my computer to work due to the following error message coming up on it with a blue background. Any help would be be appreciated. I am talking to you from the local library at this precise moment which isn't ideal but it's better than nothing I suppose. Here's the message...

A problem has been detected & windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti virus, disc defragmentation or back up utillities. check your hard drive configuration & check for any updated drivers. Run chkdsk/f to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

But I can't do any of this because I can't get past this bloody error message

Go into SAFE MODE and do a System Restore

The problem is probably caused by a corrupt file ntfs.sys and details on how to troubleshoot and hopefully fix it are found at:

http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic5352-2.html

The easiest option is to stick the disk into a second system (as a slave) and overwrite the damaged ntfs.sys file but there are several options available if you read through the first couple of pages of the thread.

Or use the XP recovery console. It should sort it in a jiffy.
