I was reading in some paper last night about some underground experiment going on on Thursday which could cause black holes .

Now i know some of you on here know about this sort of stuff,so can it happen? And if it does what will happen?

I need to know cos im hoping to win the joint effort this month...

And ill be debt free on Friday if it all goes tits up .:thumbs

Who cares - none of us would know about it. :)

its been blown out of proportion with talk of black holes etc

its been blown out of proportion with talk of black holes etcIt most certainly has!

I'm probably one of the most qualified on here (MPHys in Physics with Theoretical Physics specialising in quantume, particle and nuclear physics) to talk about what's going on at CERN with the LHC but I'm not going to do so in much detail. Needless to say the popular media has heard that the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) will create miniature black holes and that one of these could spiral out of control growing large enough to swallow everything bringing about the end of the world. To put into perspective how likely it is to happen, William Hill were offering something like 666,666,666/1 on it happening this morning and when have you ever known a bookie give a generous price.

What could come out of them starting up the LHC and running the experiments (which don't start for another 6 weeks anyway) is a much better understanding of matter, anti-matter, sub-atomic structures and an improved theory of everything. The experiments are looking for the presence (or otherwise) of certain sub-atomic particles such as the top quark and Higg's boson aka the God particle. Finding the latter will help physicists understand three of the four fundamental forces of nature better (all except gravity) but may also help explain why gravity is so weak compared to the other forces. It should also help explain why particles have the mass they do and uncover the nature of dark matter.

If you're a physics geek (as I can be on occasion) this is an awesome thing to be happening. In some respects I wish I had gone on to do post-grad work and maybe been a part of this, like the keyboard player out of D:Ream.

Who the hell would've picked up the winnings anyway? Typical Bookies! :laugh

Every time in the last 50 odd years they've brought a new collider online the black hole scare mongers have been out. Plonkers.

What these colliders manage to do is only a very small fraction of what happens billions of times a milisecond out in space. They'll never produce anything that hasn't happened already.

so at odds of 666,666,666/1 of it happening then theres more chance of it happening than city winning a trophy..:D

that will come back to haunt me.

No the world WON'T end thursday... It will take a few years for the black hole to grow big enough

And aren't they pressing the on switch on Wednesday? :doh

Remember, one of Nostradamus' predictions mentioned the city of Geneva... just where this experiment is taking place! :yikes:

We're all doomed people, DOOMED!

And aren't they pressing the on switch on Wednesday? :dohYes, but the collisions don't actually start till mid-late October

Remember, one of Nostradamus' predictions mentioned the city of Geneva... just where this experiment is taking place! :yikes:How can you say this is taking place in Geneva when the LHC is many miles in diameter and there are only 4 crossing points for the beams, none of which are actually in Geneva. Anyway, how many of Nostradamus' predictions have actually comer true? And how precise are they? Surely they can be interpreted in a number of ways...

Do you pour scorn on Mr Nostradamus and his premonitions? :yikes:

You sir, are clearly an idiot.

anyway, if a black hole was to happen(im not saying it will) what would happen? would we evaporate?, get squashed?go floating off into space??

666,666,666/1 is that all? Planet Earth destroyed. Everything obliterated. No-one alive to either pay out or pick up the winnings?

If it was a Hollywood black hole yes, but in the real world, no, they don't work that way. Just think of one as being the same as planet Earth, but a much stronger gravity. It would only interact with those things that came close to it....it would not suck everything in...(Luckily prossy Lucy on the Dock Road does for a fiver :D).
