How many of you hark back to the days when CM was the best footy management game around? Well here's a chance to relive that... a free download of the game from the CM site itself, and a link to a fanbased update taking the data to the start of the 2008 season! You just have to register with the site and bob's your uncle - I have to say this was definitely my favourite version of the game so I'm downloading it right now!

BigC - you total barsteward. There I was happily enjoying life and what do you do - put me back in touch with an old obsession.

Oh well, I didn't really like seeing my kids anyway. And as for the wife, nowhere near as good as getting Ipswich to be Champions as Europe.

Is it the 'real' Championship Manager (changed its name to Football Manager when the development team split)? Or the complete rewrite version that just inherited the name?

This is the original and best CM Oldham, the 01/02 version of CM3 - if I remember rightly this was a fave of a few folk on the forum as being pretty much the best version of the game. This is the game that lost me many an hour as well! I think they're just giving it away free to get interest in the newest version.

You can download an update to this seasons leagues and teamsas well, but you need to find the patch to take the game to it's final release version before updating with the current teams - it took me a bit of time to find the patch but I'll upload it and leave a link here shortly for anyone having trouble finding it.

Right... if you've downloaded and installed the game, next thing you need to do is install this patch to update to the final version of the 01/02 game. This is a must as it's a bugfix among other things.

Once that's done you can install the update to take the game to this season's data - you don't have to do this - if you want the nostagia trip of running the original season, leave it as is.:thumbs

As usual both files will stay on the yousendit servers for 2 weeks from now... I'll keep copies of them anyway for future reference if anyone needs them.

Can the Mods please delete this thread as quickly as possible to save BigC being the most common person named in Christmas/New Year divorce cases...:D

I can't do it BigC, I can't do it..................................................well, I might just have a look, for interests sake of course...:wink

I put the main game on, then I patched it but it is still saying it is the original version in the top left-hand corner of the game...is this normal? The game is working but I get some kind of error message about the version of the game before loading. Anybody else getting this or not?:doh

I don't know whether I'm being discriminated against for having Vista, but I have burned the image on to two separate discs and can't even get the thing to install. :(

I installed on Vista fine, but am running it in Win98/Me compatibility mode as it seems to cure memory problems I had otherwise. The patch only seems to updates the players and teams etc to this years data, but it still starts the game in 2001/2 season. Hmmm.... there's also a patch called the 'Tapanified' 2008 update - I might have a look at that when I get a bit of time as it's supposed to change a few more bits in the game than the original 08 update.

Scooby - the error message you're getting - after I updated and started a new game I got an error message, but the game seems to run ok... probably the same error.

Working now!!! :)

Been playing for the last two hours - the missus is absolutely delighted. :wink

Just had a free-kick moved forward ten yards for dissent!

Same players and conditions as today (i.e. Everton in UEFA Cup but we were not in 01/02) but, as you say BigC, season and rules remain as 01/02.

Many thanks for the tip-off Campbell, however, your Christmas card appears to have been removed from the pile that I am sending tomorrow!

I wondered what the wife was doing with them earlier! :) :wink

Thanks bigc...yes I get an error but it loads the game fine and then says I can remove the disc if I want. Working fine after that though.:thumbs

Do I have to burn it to a disc ?

I extracted the download, but says windows doesn't recognise an iso file? :doh

It's a disc image that you will need to burn to a CD. If you don't have any software that will burn images, do a google for free iso burning software.

If you can't burn to cd you can use an iso-image mounting program such as this one - daemontools lite.

http://www.disc-tools.com/download/daemon

What this does is use a part of your hard drive to 'emulate' a cd-drive. You mount the iso image in the software and it fools your computer into thinking it's an actual cd.
