But it was the RSS feeds that made me stop posting on this forum. I met some great people on here, and for a while it was one of the best forums on the net...but genuinely, it got tiresome clicking new posts only to see about 10 of these RSS feeds, sometimes telling us about the same event two and three times.

I know I'm now coming across like a muppet but I thing all is not lost and the glory days can return...

:doh

RSS only lists around 10 a day, and over 50% of them have additional posts, so they are doing what they are meant to do. They were brought in because no one was posting! :splapme

Gotta say I agree with the lad. I remember, and this was before you reduced the number of feeds down Keith I'll admit, but there were probably 15-20 RSS feeds per day - and a lot of them largely didn't attract any interest from the regular forum folk whatsoever. Now from my point of view, a forum should be about people expressing opinions on topics covered by the forum itself (I know that's bad English).

I've yet to come across any other forum that posts BBC News snippets directly from the BBC News site. If I wanted to read news, surely I'd be visiting the BBC News site, or CNN, or Sky News, and not on here... No? :doh

No offensive intended, I just know where FTB is coming from and it seems I share similar thoughts. Often all the new posts were/are just RSS feeds. They're not as in-yer-face as they used to be though... so I hope you start posting again Darren. :)

You don't visit many forums do you? :splapme

As I said the post rate dropped, to less than 20 a day sometimes, and by including the RSS the post rates picked up again. The only difference now is I don't cut'n'paste the news title from the BBC site and have a rant, which is what I used to do before the RSS script.

The forum died well before RSS ever appeared, not because of it. It picked up again once it was included, otherwise I wouldn't use it! If it brings in 10 extra people, and I lose one because of it, that is business. You can see what catering for a minority is doing to stores on the High Street at the moment.

On top of that, with low posts counts, the search engines visit less, and listings drop, not good :ermmm, so by keeping up the average post count new posts on here get indexed within 2-6 hours, unlike the 3-5 days when the post count was low. New posts on the FilipinoUK site get indexed in about 20 minutes :ooo

If you don't like them, you don't read them, that is simple. I don't read all of New Scientist, some of it is crap, but I still buy it to read the bits I like, I don't stop using things because I don't like a small part of it.

But this is a horse racing and sports forum...if we want our news...we'll go to the news sites....no?

This is my forum and I use what works on it! :splapme

Plus, you may visit the news sites, but not everyone else does, including me.

If I avoided forums that included things I didn't like on them I wouldn't use any! :ermmm

Keith has a fairly valid point in wanting to keep posting levels up. There isn't enough talk about sports betting on the forum, even though that's the purpose of the site. I am someone who is to blame for this as most of my posts these days relate to poker. I would probably post more about racing if there was more debate.

I know this might be a bit naughty but ... I hadn't even notices that FTB had stopped posting. I did notice that WB has posted an awful lot less in the past few months than previous.

Perhaps we should a new topic seeking reasons for people giving up on the forum. Keith doesn't have much to do so perhaps he could collate the results and sort everything out so he can please all of the people all of the time :)

To be honest the RSS feeds get on my nerves but I just ignore most of them.

Yep, I have bobbed it tonight, had this on overs on Killer.:ermmm Villa are a strange team but then shouldve seen this coming after Hulls last few matches, they are happy with a draw I think...0-0 at that.

With your record, you should know better than to write-off your overs chances until the final whistle! :)

the rss feeds dont bother me at all, I think keith has got a good balance with them, soetimes to see the rss feeds makes me stop and think about things that are happening in the world - probably more thasn when im watching the news, which for me I think is a good thing, the ones im not interested in I just ignore.

And yes it does keep the post numbers up, without regular posts are sure lots of people wouldnt bother checking the forum even half as often which would mean even less new posts

What I'd like to see more of is actual racing discussion - as opposed to discussing system bets only.

It's rare that a good discussion starts about how good/poor a horse is. I'm a systems man and like discussing them, but first and foremost I'm a racing fan. The threads on non-system betting don't seem to get much response.

Counterfeit, I've cut down posting here mainly for two reasons. The first is time - I'm doing a lot of work with betting.betfair.ie and don't have as much time on my hands as I did a couple of years ago when I was at college.

The other reason is that Irish racing never gets much of a response either. For example, Brave Inca, Sublimity, Hardy Eustace (all champion hurdle winners) raced against Sizing Europe the other day at Leopardstown and there wasn't a single mention of the race. It's fair enough if people don't follow Irish racing, but any posts I've made on it rarely get read or responded to so I don't bother as much. A site I co-own, Let's Bet, is based in Ireland so Irish racing is discussed a lot more there and I end up posting on that more these days.

I eventually did start a new thread when something noteworthy happened in the match - in the eighty eighth minute! :yikes:
