Jermain Defoe has scored on his first start for every club, he has pulled on the Spurs shirt before of course, so does it count as a debut? Richard Walker think so and recommend you back the England striker at [3.5] to score on Sunday afternoon.
A full-strength Wigan Athletic squad at home to cup specialists Tottenham Hotspur resplendent with new (re-)signing Jermain Defoe. I'd say we could be onto something good with this 1.30 appetiser for Sunday's main course at Old Trafford.
As I've said in the past, it would never surprise me if this was the more watchable of the two Sky televised fixtures on the day. It's the pair's second meeting in the space of 10 days - after Spurs' FA Cup victory - but this will be vastly different.
Home at the Lane, Spurs play with less inhibition and it's worth noting that, despite their relative upturn in fortunes, away wins are still proving difficult to come by for the north London strugglers. Those thinking that the change of manager has cured all ills aren't quite reading the full picture. They've still got a long way to go.
Having mentioned Defoe, it seems worthy to point out at this stage that he's scored on his début for every new team, from Bournemouth to England. Result regardless, you wouldn't want to miss out if he does it again so play him at around [3.5] in the To Score market.
The Match Odds, rightly in my eyes, see the Latics - riding high in seventh - installed as the Betfair favourites [2.64] to back. Spurs are [2.98] with The Draw at [3.4]. Much as I wanted to recommend a back for this one, my head's telling me to lay the visitors; so that's my suggestion to a [3.05] liability.
Given Spurs have rattled in seven goals in their last two games (albeit cup ties), you'd reckon this one was ripe for a few goals. Think of Wigan and the likes of Amr Zaki and Emile Heskey come to mind.
However, I fancy a less goal-rich affair, with Harry Redknapp keen to get back to a more solid approach, particularly away from home. Under 2.5 goals can be backed at [1.82] and is shorter than Overs at [2.18]. I was surprised, I thought I'd be taking a contrary view to the majority but not so it seems.
Number of goals is a tough one to call for this match, I just get the sense it won't be as gung-ho as might be expected. Following on from that, the [7.0] about a 1-1 draw and Wigan to win 1-0 at [9.4] both look decent Correct Score opportunities. Back-tracking slightly, then, backing Under 1.5 goals, a [3.25] chance, might tempt you if you feel there's not quite enough margin in the 2.5 goals category?
For something a little richer in price, how about the Half-Time/Full-Time Market. I could see Wigan/Draw [18.0] and Tottenham/Draw [16.5] as looking like a pair of options that could both be backed. Those who prefer the shorter-odds types might be taken in by Wigan/Wigan [4.7] or Draw/Wigan [7.0].
An intriguing match, this one; Defoe's return and the fact it's a quick re-match are just two of the factors that could make it a lively encounter. Tactics may dictate otherwise, I fear.
