Southwell runner overcomes awful start to land victory by a head - netting one punter £8,991 (miuns commission!).

The latest addition to the select band of successful maximum-price winning punters on Betfair came in the 2.10pm at Southwell today, when Forever's Girl was backed at [1000.0] to be placed on the exchange.

The well-backed [4.3] chance went off at [1.63] (8-13) on Betfair SP's place market in the 9-runner 5f handicap.

But when she reared, blindfold still on, as the stalls opened and lost 10 lengths and more at the start, she was laid at [1000.0] in-running to be placed.

One punter stepped in at that point and had £9 on Forever's Girl at the maximum price. And they were handsomely rewarded less than a minute later with a £8,991 return, minus commission, for their single-figure outlay as the filly got up close home to claim third by a head from Just The Lady.

And that was all it took for the punter to join one of the most exclusive clubs in racing - namely the one that consists of punters to have backed a 999-1 winner on Betfair.

I saw this at the time and couldn't believe anyone would lay at 1000 for a place even though the horse lost initial ground. I was on the flipping thing at SP.

Hence the never set lay odds over 10.5

Theses layers are nuts. I sometimes lay at 1000 when the horse has been pulled up and very, very occasionally I will get a few quid taken but I do only ever do it when the horse is out of the race. Anybody doing it while the horse is still going must be extremely brave or stupid (or both).

We've had a 1000 winner that was pulled up before :wink

The Down Royal race was crazy, the two leaders crashed into the rail and the third horse won in the end after being matched at 999/1

I think the jockey got a nine day suspension for not looking where he was going.

I thought it was very harsh to drop malanette from 2nd to 16th as the jockey couldnt do much about it.

What was the race a while back (sometime last year I'm pretty sure but can't recall when - probably jan-mar as it was NH) The radio commentator called a horse as being down and it hit 1000. He'd got the wrong horse and the phantom faller went on to win. Trying to think of the name of the horse but it won't come to me. Something with Mountain in the name is ringing a bell but that could be totally wrong.

I now remember 2 races when the faller won at 1000 :)

One was McCoy, the other was a couple of season back when the first 2 clear fell at the last, so the faller at the 3rd remounted and won.

There was a race about 18 months ago where the rag (about 50/1) went about 2 furlongs behind and all the first 3 fell in the home straight. That was absolute carnage - but bloody hilarious to watch.
