Hello people.
This morning on "the really stupid things that happen to me" type thread is PC related.
Well, strictly speaking laptop related.
I have an Acer 9300 laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium (or whatever it is called).
The hard drive is partitioned into two 40gb chunks.
It is running AMD Athlon 64 dual core.
Or, at least it was.:ooo
It got a very nasty case of a broken part so I took it in (under warranty) for repair. I got it home yesterday and booted it up.
It now only has one hard drive of 80gb and is running XP SP3. ;fire
Now I have the original system recovery disk and can reload Vista (not that I was ever a big fan) but how the hell can my laptop go in for repair and come back so different.
Also, as someone so useless with hardware, is it possible that my dual core has been mucked up or is that a constant?

One of the first thing some companies do is reformat the hard drive without asking the customer do they have backups, but that is what they have done, and put XP on by mistake.
Get hold of some partition software, split it into 2 again, and load Vista on the new one. You then have 2 OS's, so if one goes wrong you can still access the computer.

what exactly was it that was broken ? if all you needed was to have a part replaced then they should not be touching your hard drive as there is no need to reformat it what so ever and dual core refers to your processor also you may find that your recovery disks may no longer work because of the changes to your hard drive so you now have a system that is not what you paid for it should always come back with exactly the same software and drivers that were originally on it when you bought it. I have never come across this before and would be returning it to the shop that did the repair.

Hello
Did the laptop already come with the 2 partitions, or was that something you have done yourself?
If it was already like it, the recovery disk will sort that out as well. I had a recovery disk for my laptop and it changed tha partitions for me (Recovery, System and Stuff (Can't remember the third)). I don't have the disk anymore, I stood on it. Now PC World want to change me for a new one. I just took an image of my drive and burnt that to a disk instead.
I am pretty sure the dual core cannot be mesed up. You can change the speed of the processor in the system settings but unless you had done that, it wouldn't be messed up.
Cheers

Thanks. It came with two partitions and now has two again as I re-loaded the original settings.
