View Full Version : Premier Players

I thought if we get a list of Premier players that we feel are vastly over rated this might stir up a bit of a debate as of course football is a game of opinions.

Let me qualify this by saying I don't just mean those players who are, to use the excellent quote I saw on here last week (from JJ I think) "stealing a living" it can also include players who are good but that you just feel are vastly over rated. As an example I've always felt Rio Ferdinand is a good defender but is vastly overrated.

ok a few below to kick us off

"What are they doing playing in the Premier?"
Richard Hughes
Aaron Mokoena
Andy Griffin
John Utaka
Jonathan Spector
Kevin Kilbane (maybe JJ can correct me having watched him for years, but I just don't get what it is he brings to the game)

"The footballing equivalents of that hyped movie you go to see that leaves you feeling shortchanged"

Gabriel Agbonlahor
Rio Ferdniand
Gareth Barry
Steve Sidwell
Stewart Downing

Can I add Berbatov to your second list please? I just don't get it!

I'm sure there are more too, they will come to me in time...

Gareth Barry, perfect example.

Players who are overrated in my opinion include...

Wayne Rooney [he isn't as good as people make out... he really, really isn't]
Michael Ballack
Morten Gamst Pedersen
Craig Bellamy :laugh
Jose Bosingwa

Rooney's a great player, and Ballack is just having an off bit at the moment but is usually pretty good.

Just add all the Liverpool team apart from Torres/Gerrard!!!

Rooney is a great player, yeah. But he's overrated. Doesn't score as many as he should for supposed "best English striker" playing for the "best team in Premiership."

Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole would murder him. Remember that season when Andy Cole scored 40 goals for Newcastle? In a single season. 40 league goals. C'mon!

The Alan Shearers and Robbie Fowlers of today don't score nearly as many goals.

Doesn't score as many as he should for supposed "best English striker" playing for the "best team in Premiership."Rooney's problem is that he is perceived as a striker when he's not. He's a forward. He's not a massive goal-getter like Cole, Yorke, Owen, Shearer etc. He'll drop far deeper than any of those and is likely to be found in his own box when the team are under pressure, not hanging around the halfway line waiting for one of his team mates to set him free. He's almost Paul Scholes like in his box-to-box play. You won't get that many goals out of him a season but he has a wicked shot on him and works hard for the team. Overrated? Perhaps, by people who don't understand what he does in the game. As I say, he's not a striker.

My initial additions to list one:-

Tony Hibbert
Giovani Dos Santos
Philippe Senderos
Luis Boa Morte
Paul McShane
Greg Halford
Zat Knight

My initial additions to list two:-

Deco
Nicklas Bendtner
Ryan Babel
Lucas Leiva
Nani
David Bentley
Damien Duff

Matt, I can confirm that, like Hibbert in the above list, Kevin Kilbane offered precious little other than effort and endeavour which, with respect, any one of us could do. :)

I reserve the right to add more as and when I remember them! :wink

Ok, after watching him again last night I think it's time Nani actually went into list 1 !
