mathare's Team Ratings Systems

This is an idea for a football system that has come out of the work I have done so far in researching possible football systems as documented (to some degree at least) in my gamblog. It is a ratings based system that uses the rating of a team to calculate their chance of winning their next match, from this fair odds are computed and compared to the actual odds on offer. If the difference between the two sets of odds is in the right range then we place the bet (1pt level stakes).

I have tested this system over 4 seasons (05/06 to 08/09) and for that period a profit of 119.54pts was attained from 1514 bets for a ROI of 7.90%. I have also applied this test to the start of the 09/10 season but with mixed results so far (-14.59pts from 125 bets, ROI of -11.67%), mainly because the away bets seem to be underperforming.

I honestly don't know how this one will pan out so this is very much a paper trade and I wouldn't follow this one with any money at this stage. It may lead to nothing and could be scrapped at the end of the season but at least I am trying new things eh?

When I was checking the fixtures the other day I spotted the Monday night game in the Championship but completely missed the nine fixtures in the same division that were played last night. And it just had to be a great evening for the systems too didn't it? ;fire

I'm going to post the qualifiers (with results) for completeness. I know it could be construed as after-timing but I assure it's not, and this is a paper trade anyway. The rules used to pick these matches are the same rules I use every time I run these systems. The odds I have used are the best odds I could find from Bet365, Ladbrokes, Sporting Bet, William Hill, Stan James and Victor Chandler and are taken from football-data.co.uk. It's not an ideal situation as I haven't recorded the odds myself (and I pride myself on getting accurate information and posting up my bets before the event!) but it's the best I can do to mirror the situation I would have been in yesterday had I spotted the fixtures before 9.30pm!

I'd need to dig out all the spreadsheets I used to put this together to answer it but I suspect it's just not as robust as I thought it was. I kinda gave up on this one a while back but will paper-trade to the end of the season just to see how it goes. I will be starting work on some new systems soon but I'm not sure I will have anythng concrete before the end of the season.

I've picked out one of the worst-performing systems to examine - Football League Linear which is showing a loss of nearly 40pts this season (although only 6.30pts since the paper trade started). I have produced a graph of the profits prior to this season and attached it. It shows there have been bad spells before but not this bad.

Now, that's only 1 system out of many but I think the reason for the poor showing from these systems is a bit of bad luck as well as the fact that they are not that well thought out. A lot of work went into them but the basic premise is a bit dodgy as it takes each team in isolation without considering the strength of the opposition at all.

As I said a few minutes ago, I'm going to be working on other systems soon and they will be far better prepared than these have been. They will also be more complicated in terms of the rules as this is quite simplistic. I fear I may have back-fitted elements of some of these system too as the odds have to be in a certain range for a team to qualify and while I can sort of justify these odds filters it may be a little dodgy to use them as I have done.

Another poor weekend, losing 22.77pts. Not even a win for Millwall tonight will pull that back.

We're getting towards the end of the season now with 6 or 7 weeks left and that's probably a good time to start looking at the figures for these systems with a view to seeing what might return next season. None of the individual fit systems are likely to survive the summer. Only one (Logarithmic Away) has shown a profit during the paper trade and only that one and the Linear Home system are profitable over the course of the season. It's fair to say these were interesting ideas that haven't panned out for whatever reason. Never mind, move on. When it comes to the divisional systems it's clear that this approach is only really working in League Two. I'm not really sure why, perhaps the odds get less attention from the odds compilers offering more value opportunities in this division. Who knows for sure? The League Two Logarithmic system is the weakest of the three in that division but is still profitable over the season as a whole. The other fits in this division have done pretty well during the paper trade and overall though and seem to be returning good profits and at decent ROI too so these may well make an appearance next season. Still a few weeks to go though...

Poor - again! This idea is unlikely to make it through the close season without radical changes, if it survives at all. Oh well, it was worth a try I guess.

That said, some of the systems didn't do too bad. The League Two systems did OK, for example. But for me to continue with those I need to look at why they have done so much better than other divisional systems and to establish the reasons behind their performance. If it is just down to luck then I need to know that so I can proceed with caution next season (if I continue to trial them). A lot of analysis and thinking to be done before August.

I have better systems in development and I also have a feeling that that League Two performance was somewhat of a fluke.
