At a loss as to what to do until the racing returns?
Have a go at these ......

1. The objective is to crack the combination of the safe using the clues.

The safe combination looks like this:

??-??-??-??

A digit can be used more than once in the code, and there are no leading zeroes.

Here are the clues:

a) The third set of two numbers is the same as the first set reversed.

b) There are no 2's, 3's, 4's or 5's in any of the combination.

c) If you multiply 4 by the third set of numbers, you will get the fourth set of numbers.

d) If you add the first number in the first set with the first number in the second set you will get 8.

e) The second set of numbers is not greater than 20.

f) The second number in the second set multiplied by the second number in the fourth set equals one higher than the numbers in the first set.

2. Suppose you're in a hallway lined with 100 closed lockers.
You begin by opening every locker.
Then you close every second locker.
Then you go to every third locker and open it (if it's closed) or close it (if it's open).
Let's call this action toggling a locker.
Continue toggling every nth locker on pass number n.
After 100 passes, where you toggle only locker #100, how many lockers are open?

3. Five guests, Mr. Smith, Ms. Jones, Sir Brown, Lord Green and Miss Scarlet, were all invited to an exclusive party at Merryfield Mansion.
However, during the long, dark night, the owner of the spectacular mansion, Mr. Merryfield, was found dead in his office.
The trouble is, every member of the party went into his office, each at a different time, with a different weapon, motive and clue that incriminated them.
From their statements below, can you work out who killed him?

Mr. Smith's statement: "I didn't do it. I never left a footprint because a woman did.
I entered the room before the person who took in the poison.
I must say though, she was in there for a quarter of an hour before someone else went in!"

Ms. Jones's statement: "Okay, I admit it! I took in the revolver, even though my motive wasn't revenge.
A man entered the room after me and his motive was either rage or blackmail."

Sir Brown's statement: "All I know is, I did leave a fingerprint, but that doesn't explain why Miss Scarlet lost a hair, does it?
Oh yes! The person who entered seventy minutes before me took in the lead piping."

Lord Green's statement: "I entered after a woman, who did not take in rope because the last person to visit him did.
I was in there for more than thirty-five minutes confronting Mr. Merryfield with my motive, which, may I say, wasn't greed or blackmail."

Miss Scarlet's statement: "Yes, you caught me! My motive was jealousy, but it wasn't as bad as that man's blackmail motive, who entered at five minutes past nine.
I entered before another man who left the incriminating clue of the blood drop."

The person who entered the room at half past ten is the real killer. Who did it?

Right I reckon as follows for number 3 [highlight below to reveal...]

Mr Smith - 9.05 - Poison - Blackmail - Unknown Clue
Miss Scarlet - 9.20 - Lead Piping - Jealousy - Hair
Lord Green - 9.35 - Unknown Weapon - Revenge - Blood Print
Ms Jones - 10.10 - Revolver - Greed - Footprint
Sir Brown - 10.30 - Rope - Rage - Fingerprint

So I reckon the killer is Sir Brown.

Although, it was very confusing and some of the answers I have guessed at!

Vegy,

I've changed your text to white, I hope you don't mind, but I do want to try and work it out for myself! :)

I'm afraid your answer is very wrong Vegy.

I've done it & it does work.......HOWEVER.......

......I've noticed in the 'real' answer that it is a puzzle with a logic grid drawn out which you fill in as you go.
The grid includes the 5th 'unknown clue' - a note, which is not mentioned in the statements' dialogue AND all the actual times that people entered the office.
No wonder you found it confusing.......I didn't include all the info !!! :splapme
Sorry, my fault :doh

So, to clarify, the variables are.....

Mr. Smith
Ms. Jones
Sir Brown
Lord Green

4) T, I think, is Ronsil Quick Drying Woodstain?

I just got d) and n) and realised Matt had got them last week! :D Whatever happened to Hoffmeister...used to drink that a lot in the 80's? It's like Castlemaine XXXX, that seems to have gone too?

TheGoodGuy

4) T, I think, is Ronsil Quick Drying Woodstain?

Yep, Ronseal is correct.

vegyjones

I reckon I have it now... :D [highlight below to reveal...]

Mr Smith - 9.05 - Dagger - Blackmail - Note
Miss Scarlet - 10.30 - Poison - Jealousy - Hair
Lord Green - 10.45 - Lead Piping - Revenge - Blood Print
Ms Jones - 11.25 - Revolver - Greed - Footprint
Sir Brown - 11.55 - Rope - Rage - Fingerprint

And thus, this time I think Miss Scarlet.

Maybe not quite at Colmbo's level quite just yet :laugh

That's more like it, well done Vegy.

It's so much easier when you're given ALL the necessary info by the question-setter, don't you think? :pk1

I bet Columbo would still have worked it out!

I love them logic problem's. Thanks Ada!

I have just spent 20 minutes on this slowly working it out, probably wrong but here goes.

Mr Smith 9.05 blooddrip revenge dagger
Miss Scarlett 10.30 hair jealousy poison
Lord Green 10.45 note rage lead piping
Ms. Jones 11.25 footprint greed revolver
Sir Brown 11.55 fingerprint blackmail rope

So the murderer is Miss Scarlett. If I am wrong, I'll come back to it so don't tell me correct answer. :)

:splapme Am I miles away Ada...is the murderer incorrect?

Somehow you've got the murderer correct AND for all the right reasons......plus you have correctly sorted out one other suspect......however, the rest are wrong.
You've found the culprit by whatever means, so the choice is yours if you want to try again & get it all correct.

I'll have another go from scratch over the next few days, I really thought I had cracked it all. :ermmm

I've just worked through a scaled-down version of this and reckon 'x' lockers are open at the end. I can show my workings and/or give the locker numbers on request

Yep, that's the right answer Mat.
You'll also notice that the numbers of the open lockers all have something in common.

:thumbsI did it with 10 lockers first and spotted the pattern which is how I got the answer.

They are: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100 - the square numbers
