Back in August 2009 Swindon council decided to get rid of all speed cameras......and the stats on accidents and road deaths?
1 Death prior to the cameras being taken out of action, none after, and overall a drop in accidents!!! Go figure!!

People in Swindon now watch the road instead of the speedo.....

.....and someone managed to get hold of the government stats and it shows they have been cherry picking as the counties without cameras have similar accident rates to those with hundreds of them. :ass2

Now the simple signs that flash up your speed actually do slow cars down, and you don't have to refocus your eyes off the road to the dashboard either.

Keep the speed cameras - fine people who break the law £100 per mph over the limit plus 1 point per mph on their license.

I guarantee that people will slow down!

The maximum speed limit is 70mph (+10% for Advanced license holders) - so why aren't all cars fitted with delimiters?

The point of the speed cameras was to save lives (make money actually), but it's now proven they don't, so they need to stop investig money on them and invest it in techniques that do save lives, and lower accident rates.

Unfortunately, the only way to save lives on the roads is to remove the arrogant drivers who think that laws are for other people; the 'social drinkers' who consider it OK to just have one more but never drive after more than two; the drivers who still call the outside lane of a motorway 'the fast lane' rather than the overtaking lane; the 'I have a right to park where I want, when I want' who then threatens physical abuse to the people whose job it is to enforce the law.

Make the penalties tougher! Keep the speed cameras - and use the money to pay for prisons to house persistent offenders (i.e. second offence!!). And for drink drivers? 10 years imprisonment for a first offence and bring back capital punishment for anybody stupid enough to do it twice!

There will always be road accidents whilst humans are in control of the vehicles...too many reasons for people to crash...mobile phone, alcohol, eyesight, weather, music, talking, poor judgement, poor driving skills...the list is endless - and when you combine this with being in control of a machine which can reach speeds over 100mph....recipe for disaster!

Cars kill more people than guns or knives. A gun is a harmless piece of metal until it is in the hands of some moron, like many cars.
