Stumbled across this site last night which I thought could prove handy while his offspring look set to dominate the stallion charts....

SADLER'S WELLS

b - 1981 - Northern Dancer (Can) - Fairy Bridge (USA)

Sadler's Wells won six of his eleven starts from 7f to 10f including the Group 1 Airlie -Coolmore Irish 2000 Guineas, Coral Eclipse Stakes and Phoenix Champion Stakes. He was second in the Group 1 Prix Du Jockey Club and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes

Under normal circumstances Sadler's Wells would be remembered as the high-class racehorse that his form merited but his place in history was to change as he went on to become a phenomenon in the breeding world of Europe, expressing a degree of dominance unmatched by even the likes of Hyperion.

Portrait of Sadler's Wells reproduced with kind permision of
Lisa Miller Equestrian Art.

WHO'S THE DADDY?

At Coolmore Stud Sadler's Wells career as a sire has produced 254 individual Stakes winners - 70 individual Group 1 winners - 22 individual Classic winners - 21 Group 1 winning 2-y-o's - 14 sire titles in Great Britain & Ireland.

And a whole lot more:

They are even asking for memories...

Bit of a strong comment on Channel 4 yesterday by Jim McGrath, he reckons Galileo could turn out every bit as good as his sire, Sadler's Wells, as a stallion....

Mind you, a few more like Frankel and he could be right:yikes:

Has had a couple of winners lately that could prove worth following:

Ruler Of All (Ire) - won a hot little race in Ireland over the weekend & yesterday

Veiled, a mare with Nicky Henderson who was with M Prescott on the flat, she's won a third of all her starts & I can see her present trainer going for some black type.

Crikey, was that only 2 months ago?

anyway - the figs she clocked yesterday over 14g Newmarket suggest to me that she could be better than Listed class & what with Newm being a specialist track & the trainer's recent record of 4 from 8 including Veiled....

Crikey - there was me thinking I could almost put the feet up while all these donkeys run around prior to Ascot, only to find I seem to have missed the French Derby meet & come across something interesting -

I have emboldened above those dam-sires where Sadler's Wells has won most money & those with whom he has a better win to run strike rate with.

I suppose I'm mental but for me little things like this is what makes horse racing the infinite science that it surely is -

This is the Racing Post Breeding Analysis for the French Derby:

BREEDING ANALYSIS: "Thirty-three years after Fair Salinia won the Epsom and Irish Oaks her owner Sven Hanson is still reaping the rewards from her at stud. He bred 1,000 Guineas fourth Perfect Circle and Prix Quincey winner Perfect Vintage from her plus the Sadler´s Wells mare On Fair Stage, winner of the Listed Ruby Stakes over 1m at Tralee. On Fair Stage has produced 1m4f Listed winner Gale Force, high-class chaser French Opera and now Reliable Man.

[B]Reliable Man is the fourth Group 1 winner for Dalakhani, winner of the Prix du Jockey Club over 1m4f and the Arc, and the third of those out of a Sadler´s Wells mare. The other two, Conduit and Moonstone, also won Classics.

Considering the potency of the Sadler´s Wells-Darshaan cross, it was inevitable that one of Darshaan´s best sons, Dalakhani, would receive plenty of Sadler´s Wells mares to produce a reverse of the nick. It is also responsible for Group 3 winners Deem and Shreyas and Listed scorer Yahrab."

Got two in the same race today 4.30 Donc & I wouldn't want to begrudge the queen another winner with Wayward Glance who is my most clear top-rated at the meet but he's not the only one to let the form down from the race where he earned his estimate - I prefer the John Gosden first-time-out, Light Well over him.

Unity, should be up to a Listed race

& Natural High, a 6yo who has won 4 of his 9 starts, is on course for Galway where he has a pretty good record - 133 - the win came in a bumper & he's set to go hurdling now.

Just found this nice article on the old boy:

Tribute to Sadler’s Wells

Reflections on the career of the great stallion, who died on April 26, 2011, aged 30

Wednesday, May 25, 2011
Staff writer

Thirty years ago, if an owner or trainer wished to give himself the best chance of buying a yearling with genuine pretensions to winning the Derby, he was obliged to head to Kentucky for the Keeneland July Sale. While Britain was still home to a handful of established owner/breeders’ studs which collectively produced a few Classic prospects each year, the world’s best stallions were located in Kentucky, and the American yearling sales were thus the place where Europeans might find their Classic prospects.

Those days now seem a lifetime away. That is, of course, because they are a lifetime away: Sadler’s Wells’s lifetime. And it was largely the achievements of Sadler’s Wells during his glorious 30-year life which made the difference.

Sadler’s Wells, who died at his home at Coolmore Stud on April 26, almost single-handedly repaired the damage which had been done to Europe’s stallion ranks by the decades which had seen the pick of Europe’s Classic colts and stallions exported westwards. What the great Anglophile Paul Mellon had started when steering Mill Reef towards the British National Stud, Sadler’s Wells completed: the leading studs of Britain and Ireland are once more the home of the Classic racehorse.

Today's conundrum:

7.50 Tipp

I got Calima as clear top-tated but so far they've not been doing too well at the course and the stable have a 2nd-string who is sired by Sadler's Wells in Sadler's Rock - who is tongue-strapped first time and has a jockey on board who has a better strike-rate with the trainer too but both jockey's have poor records at the course.

If you limit it to trainer/race type & dist - trainer/jockey - sire going & distance stats, then Sadler's Rock could be worth an EW interest?

Er, & a Gold Cup no less:ermmm

& the daddy just keeps racking up the achievements:

Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup

SYNCHRONISED (9 g Sadler's Wells - Mayasta by Bob Back)

Bred by Noreen McManus in Ireland

The 2012 Cheltenham Gold Cup will be savoured by the McManus family for a long time to come as not only does the winner carry the colours of J P McManus but was bred by his wife Noreen.

Sadler's Wells maybe Europe's most influential Flat stallion of recent times but his influence in the winter game is strengthening all the time thanks to sons such as King's Theatre, Old Vic, Accordion, Kayf Tara and Milan. The seventh Festival winner by Sadler's Wells, Synchronised is the first Cheltenham Gold Cup winner by the greatstallion, who is also the grandsire of the runner-up The Giant Bolster, by Galileo's brother Black Sam Bellamy (another good result for Shade Oak Stud following the victory of Simonsig, by Fair Mix).
In fact, no fewer than 11 of the week's 27 winners descended from Sadler's Wells, who becomes the first stallion to sire a winner of the Derby and Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Interesting young chaser that Synchronised, adding a Midlands National to his CV!

Same comment should apply to Big Occasion being younger than above & his later exploits of a Welsh National & Gold Cup ? ?

This 'ere Sadler's Risk seems to have a fair shout in the 2.45 Cork - made a nice start to new career?

Sadler´s Risk: Classy recruit from Britain where rated 150 over hurdles at his best; demonstrated that class on chasing debut at Roscommon in May with bold jumping display to go clear from two out over 2m5f (soft); exciting novice who looks set to go on to much better things over fences and could take the beating here.

Un Beau Matin: 138-rated hurdler made successful transition to fences at Punchestown last month despite novicey round of jumping, asserting run-in over 2m4f; needs to be more fluent against this class of opposition, major chance if doing so

The Crafty Butcher: Killarney beginners´ chase winner in May didn´t reappear until last month when never nearer third to Band Of Blood over C & D; can be expected to come on for that and not one to discount.

Allied Victory: Half-brother to Irish National winner Hear The Echo surpassed hurdles form on recent chase debut, impressing in his jumping and drawing away before the last over 2m6f at Thurles (good); smart staying novice prospect although would ideally want a bit further.

Perfect Gentleman: Lightly-raced 9yo who won his only bumper and added two hurdle wins including here in February and returned to track last month for impressive start (2m7f) over fences at Tipperary, warming to his jumping and asserting from two out over 2m7f; four-miler at Cheltenham possibly on the agenda so this drop in trip may not be in his favour.

Silver Tassie: Fair hurdler who ran away with Kilbeggan beginners´ event on chase debut in September but hasn´t really progressed in two outings since, latest when ultimately no match for Indevan at Tipperary; looks to have even more on his plate here.

A year later wins Munster National only his 5th chase start - gotta be patient in this game..

Is only seven, could be great sire's last hurrah ? ?
