Jockey George Gorman was handed a 14-day suspension after missing out the final fence by mistake when leading in the Betfair Lambourn Open Day 6th April Hunters' Chase at Newbury.
The amateur rider had guided his mount Merry Vic (11-4) to the front in the home straight and looked set to go and collect after jumping the second-last on the 10-year-old, trained by his mother Carolyn.
However, Gorman guided Merry Vic around the final obstacle and continued driving until the line. The error of his ways dawned on him as he made his way off the track.
The water jump on the far side of the track is jumped on the first circuit and bypassed on the run-in, which appears to be what confused the 17-year-old rider, who is still at school.
Gorman said: "I knew I had to go around the water jump, and I thought the last fence was the water jump. It's as simple as that."
The mistake meant Offshore Account (8-1) took top honours under Nick Sutton, with Coombe Hill filling the runner-up spot.
Sutton said: "I could see what he (Gorman) was doing and he won't do it again, that's for sure. You get some lucky winners, but you also get some unlucky losers as well."
Favourite Roulez Cool made much of the running under Sam Waley-Cohen, but he made a serious error at the second fence in the home straight and was unable to recover.
