Dead Heats

Not sure whether this should be here on in Bets Explained. Anyway...

What happens to win single bets when a horse is in a dead heat for first place? How is the bet changed?

I ask because I am trying to work out why my bet on Acclamation was settled as it was (17p return for 20p stake)

They are settled as half the stake to the winning odds which means that even though the horse won, you can actually lose money when it wins.
